A Short Introduction to “Windows 10”.

Windows 10 ( An Introduction ).

Since its release in October 2012, Microsoft’s Windows 8 has been a real ‘Marmite’ of an operating system. Whilst some appreciated its speed and interface, a great many criticised its departure from the trusted desktop environment and its lack of a start button. Microsoft addressed many of these issues with the release of Windows 8.1 a year later, but for many the reputation of Windows 8 was already tarnished and a lot of users stuck with the solid and reliable Windows 7 OS.

So what’s next from the tech giant based in Redmond, California? Well the next release of their massively dominant desktop operating system – Windows 10 – is well on its way.

Wait you say, what happened to Windows 9? Well Microsoft haven’t given a definitive answer as to why 9 was skipped, but they did state that the new OS took such a “different approach” that it wouldn’t be right to call it Windows 9. Many people have speculated that the Windows 10 name was used to distance the new platform from Windows 8, in the same way that Windows 7 replaced the ill thought of Vista.

So what can we expect from Windows 10?
Well firstly it should be noted that this is the first new operating system release which has been over seen by Microsoft’s new CEO, Satya Nadella, who believes Microsoft need to refocus and innovate. What this translates to is Windows 10 will be another attempt to make an operating system that meets the needs of numerous modern devices, such as standard desktop PC’s, touch screens, tablets and phones. Heard that before? Well yes it was part of the remit for Windows 8, but this time Microsoft have listened to feedback and refined the approach to hopefully give a far slicker and more ‘intelligent’ system, which will switch to the most appropriate interface for the device it is running on.
As with the last couple of versions of Windows, Microsoft has allowed anyone to download the Technical Preview version of the software for testing purposes. This approach allows the tech giant to receive constant feedback from a huge cross section of their potential audience, which in turn allows them to ‘fine tune’ the software to users tastes.

Start Screen

Over the coming months we’ll be keeping a firm eye on Windows 10 and giving you updated information – but for now let’s have a brief look at some of the known features :

Universal approach – with not only the operating system, but also apps which will run across multiple platforms.
Integration of the operating system with the highly popular Xbox One games console. So the Xbox app will bring contacts, games records etc to the pc environment.
Microsoft’s popular and well thought of digital assistant, Cortana, will make it to the desktop world. This ultimately brings a powerful voice recognition facility to all Windows 10 devices.
Alongside Windows 10, Microsoft will ship a new modern web browser, currently codenamed “Project Spartan” (further influences from the popular Halo Xbox game). This will be the default web browser, with Internet Explorer being included for compatibility reasons. This will have a host of new features, including integration with the above mentioned Cortana.
DirectX 12 – a whole new graphics API which promises faster and more detailed graphics from any hardware that supports it. Microsoft have said that users of Windows 7 and 8 will should be able to perform an ‘upgrade’ as opposed to a full new install. For Windows 8 users, this will actually be delivered through the Windows update mechanism. Windows 7 will be a little more involved, but we are of course here to help.
A whole new and improved start menu (Hurrah!!) – with some highly customisable features designed to work with touchscreen or mouse users.
So there you have it, our initial look at Windows 10, which should be launching late this summer. We’ll be watching this one with much interest and will be reporting back with some more details and information as we find it.
For now be rest assured that Microsoft will be pulling all the stops out to get this release right, and to address the negative feedback which Windows 8 rightly or wrongly received. Keep checking back for more new articles on Windows 10 in the near future.

1. Problem Steps Recorder
As the local PC guru you’re probably very used to friends and family asking for help with their computer problems, yet having no idea how to clearly describe what’s going on. It’s frustrating, but Microsoft feels your pain, and Windows 7 will include an excellent new solution in the Problem Steps Recorder.
When any app starts misbehaving under Windows 7 then all your friends need do is click Start, type PSR and press Enter, then click Start Record. If they then work through whatever they’re doing then the Problem Steps Recorder will record every click and keypress, take screen grabs, and package everything up into a single zipped MHTML file when they’re finished, ready for emailing to you. It’s quick, easy and effective, and will save you hours of troubleshooting time.

Add Shutdown and Reboot to the Windows 8 Win+X Menu

Add Shutdown and Reboot to the Windows 8 Win+X Menu

By : Shan M Saleem

Shutting down and restarting your computer should both be easy tasks, right? Well, in Windows 8, these tasks are not straightforward. However, there are easier ways of shutting down and restarting your Windows 8 computer.

We’ve showed you before how to shut down or restart your Windows 8 computer and how to add shut down, restart, and sleep shortcuts to the Windows 8 Metro Start screen.

Recently, we wrote about the new Win+X menu in Windows 8 and showed you how to add items to it manually and using a free tool. The Win+X menu has many useful commands and system utilities and seems to be the perfect place to put shortcuts for shutting down and restarting your computer. We will show you how to add shut down and restart shortcuts to the Win+X menu.

First, you need to create shortcuts for the Shut Down and Restart commands. To do this, see our article about adding shut down and restart shortcuts to the Windows 8 Metro Start screen.

Once you have your shortcuts, modify the shortcut files and add them to the Win+X Menu manually or use the Win+X Menu Editor to add them to the Win+X menu.

We decided to put the shortcuts in their own new group so they are separated from the rest of the options on the Win+X menu.

Once you have manually restarted Windows Explorer or applied the changes in the Win+X Menu Editor, the Restart and Shut Down commands are available on the Win+X menu.

Remember that the Windows 8 was designed with tablets, like the iPad, in mind, so it has a different concept about certain features. You generally don’t shut down tablets completely. They just go into low power mode when you press the power button. That’s why the shut down feature is hidden. It’s not meant to be used a lot. However, adding shut down and restart shortcuts to the Win+X menu, or the Start screen, makes it easier for those of us using desktop computers or laptops we shut down to transport often.

stuck using a Windows machine, this little app from Stardock can help–if only very slightly. The premise behind ObjectDock is very simple: it adds an animated, Mac-inspired dock to your desktop that provides easy access to useful shortcuts and serves to replace your taskbar (if you so choose).

In addition, the free version of ObjectDock includes various “docklets” (Stardock’s term for widgets) that can provide quick access to weather, time, and so on. For even more features, there’s an option to upgrade to the Plus version for $19.95. Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET)

The Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET) is designed to help prevent hackers from gaining access to your system.

Software vulnerabilities and exploits have become an everyday part of life. Virtually every product has to deal with them and consequently, users are faced with a stream of security updates. For users who get attacked before the latest updates have been applied or who get attacked before an update is even available, the results can be devastating: malware, loss of PII, etc.

Security mitigation technologies are designed to make it more difficult for an attacker to exploit vulnerabilities in a given piece of software. EMET allows users to manage these technologies on their system and provides several unique benefits:

1. No source code needed: Until now, several of the available mitigations (such as Data Execution Prevention) have required for an application to be manually opted in and recompiled. EMET changes this by allowing a user to opt in applications without recompilation. This is especially handy for deploying mitigations on software that was written before the mitigations were available and when source code is not available.

2. Highly configurable: EMET provides a higher degree of granularity by allowing mitigations to be individually applied on a per process basis. There is no need to enable an entire product or suite of applications. This is helpful in situations where a process is not compatible with a particular mitigation technology. When that happens, a user can simply turn that mitigation off for that process.

3. Helps harden legacy applications: It’s not uncommon to have a hard dependency on old legacy software that cannot easily be rewritten and needs to be phased out slowly. Unfortunately, this can easily pose a security risk as legacy software is notorious for having security vulnerabilities. While the real solution to this is migrating away from the legacy software, EMET can help manage the risk while this is occurring by making it harder to hackers to exploit vulnerabilities in the legacy software.

4. Ease of use: The policy for system wide mitigations can be seen and configured with EMET’s graphical user interface. There is no need to locate up and decipher registry keys or run platform dependent utilities. With EMET you can adjust setting with a single consistent interface regardless of the underlying platform.

5. Ongoing improvement: EMET is a living tool designed to be updated as new mitigation technologies become available. This provides a chance for users to try out and benefit from cutting edge mitigations. The release cycle for EMET is also not tied to any product. EMET updates can be made dynamically as soon as new mitigations are ready

The toolkit includes several pseudo mitigation technologies aimed at disrupting current exploit techniques. These pseudo mitigations are not robust enough to stop future exploit techniques, but can help prevent users from being compromised by many of the exploits currently in use. The mitigations are also designed so that they can be easily updated as attackers start using new exploit techniques.

This makes it easy to control it from several interfaces at once: for example, you can start a virtual machine in a typical virtual machine GUI and then control that machine from the command line, or possibly remotely. VirtualBox also comes with a full Software Development Kit: even though it is Open Source Software, you don’t have to hack the source to write a new interface for VirtualBox.
  • Virtual machine descriptions in XML. The configuration settings of virtual machines are stored entirely in XML and are independent of the local machines. Virtual machine definitions can therefore easily be ported to other computers.
  • Guest Additions for Windows, Linux and Solaris. VirtualBox has special software that can be installed inside Windows, Linux and Solaris virtual machines to improve performance and make integration much more seamless. Among the features provided by these Guest Additions are mouse pointer integration and arbitrary screen solutions (e.g. by resizing the guest window). There are also guest additions for OS/2 with somewhat reduced functionality.
  • Shared folders. Like many other virtualization solutions, for easy data exchange between hosts and guests, VirtualBox allows for declaring certain host directories as “shared folders”, which can then be accessed from within virtual machines.

Windows 8 Codec Pack Released – Free Download

Windows 8 Codec Pack

First Codec Pack for Windows 8 Now Releasd. Download the Codec Pack and play unsupported file formats.

Head over to http://shark007.net/ to download the free codec pack

Playing unsupported file formats is now that little bit easier thanks to the first Windows 8 Codec Pack

When unsupported file formats are found in Windows 8, they become codecs. Players then have to troubleshoot in what can, sometimes, be drawn-out processes. However, The Windows 8 Codec Pack has now been released which will alleviate some of those issues.

For example, wmv files can be played with no problems while mkv files can’t. If users want to play unsupported formats, you can convert the file format into something supported by the operating system. This takes time though, as it’s not as simple as typing in another extension like you could with a picture file.

Another solution is to install third-party program that solves the compatibility issues. A popular option, particulars on Macs, is to install the VLC Media Player which supports a huge amount of file formats.

However, if you play files through the software that comes bundled with the OS – such as Windows Media Player – and requires the installation of codecs to add support for operating systems. Two ways to do this are to install codec files individually, or install packs that provide updates for lots of formats at the same time.

With that in mind, the first codec Pack for windows 8 has been released by the same author who created codec packs for Windows 7. The pack adds file support including dvx, flac, flv, mkv, rmvb, xvid and plenty more formats. The pack removes codecs if there are compatibility issues.

Installing Windows 8 codec pack

If you’re wondering how to install the first codec pack, here’s a rundown of the process as there are lots of features:

1. Full colour thumbnails: include FLVs and 10bt MKVs
2. Can enable the preview pane for all newly embedded file types
3. Allows use of the PDVD12 decoders for for 32bit LiveTV
4. Supports the Xbox 360 as extenders to playback MKV files
5. Support for single click setup of bistreamed audio
6. Playback support of MOD audio files and M4A files containing ALAC
7. Playlist creation support in Media Center
8. Users can enable/disable codecs installed on system
9. Support Add to Windows Media Player List by right clicking on all files

How to Recover that Photo, Picture or File You Deleted Accidentally.,…

How to Recover that Photo, Picture or File You Deleted Accidentally.,…

Have you ever accidentally deleted a photo on your camera, computer, USB drive, or anywhere else? What you might not know is that you can usually restore those pictures—even from your camera’s memory stick.

Windows tries to prevent you from making a big mistake by providing the Recycle Bin, where deleted files hang around for a while—but unfortunately it doesn’t work for external USB drives, USB flash drives, memory sticks, or mapped drives. Luckily there’s another way to recover deleted files.

Note: we originally wrote this article a year ago, but we’ve received this question so many times from readers, friends, and families that we’ve polished it up and are republishing it for everybody. So far, everybody has reported success!

Restore that File or Photo using Recuva

The first piece of software that you’ll want to try is called Recuva, and it’s extremely easy to use—just make sure when you are installing it, that you don’t accidentally install that stupid Yahoo! toolbar that nobody wants.

Now that you’ve installed the software, and avoided an awful toolbar installation, launch the Recuva wizard and let’s start through the process of recovering those pictures you shouldn’t have deleted.

The first step on the wizard page will let you tell Recuva to only search for a specific type of file, which can save a lot of time while searching, and make it easier to find what you are looking for.

Next you’ll need to specify where the file was, which will obviously be up to wherever you deleted it from. Since I deleted mine from my camera’s SD card, that’s where I’m looking for it.

The next page will ask you whether you want to do a Deep Scan. My recommendation is to not select this for the first scan, because usually the quick scan can find it. You can always go back and run a deep scan a second time.

And now, you’ll see all of the pictures deleted from your drive, memory stick, SD card, or wherever you searched. Looks like what happened in Vegas didn’t stay in Vegas after all…

If there are a really large number of results, and you know exactly when the file was created or modified, you can switch to the advanced view, where you can sort by the last modified time. This can help speed up the process quite a bit, so you don’t have to look through quite as many files.

At this point, you can right-click on any filename, and choose to Recover it, and then save the files elsewhere on your drive. Awesome!

How to Change Windows 7 Start Orb the Easy Way

Want to make your Windows 7 PC even more unique and personalized?  Then check out this easy guide on how to change your start orb in Windows 7.

Getting Started

First, download the free Windows 7 Start Button Changer (link below), and extract the contents of the folder.  It contains the app along with a selection of alternate start button orbs you can try out.

Before changing the start button, we advise creating a system restore point in case anything goes wrong.  Enter System Restore in your Start menu search, and select “Create a restore point”.

Please note:  We tested this on both the 32 bit and 64 bit editions of Windows 7, and didn’t encounter any problems or stability issues.  That said, it is always prudent to make a restore point just in case a problem did happen.

Click the Create button…

Then enter a name for the restore point, and click Create.

Changing the Start Orb.

Once this is finished, run the Windows 7 Start Button Changer as administrator by right-clicking on it and selecting “Run as administrator”.  Accept the UAC prompt that will appear.

If you don’t run it as an administrator, you may see the following warning.  Click Quit, and then run again as administrator.

You should now see the Windows 7 Start Button Changer.  On the left it shows what your current (default) start orb looks like inactive, when hovered over, and when selected.  Click the orb on the right to select a new start button.

Here we browsed to the sample orbs folder, and selected one of them.  Let’s give Windows the Media Center orb for a start orb.  Click the orb you want, and then select open.

When you click Open, your screen will momentarily freeze and your taskbar will disappear.  When it reappears, your computer will have gone from having the old, default Start orb style…

…to your new, exciting Start orb!  Here it is default, and glowing when hovered over.

Now, the Windows 7 Start Orb Changer will change, and show your new Start orb on the left side.  If you would like to revert to the default orb, simply click the folder icon to restore it.  Or, if you would like to change the orb again, restore the original first and then select a new one.

The orbs don’t have to be round; here’s a fancy Windows 7 logo as the start button.

The start orb change will work in the Aero and Aero basic (which Windows 7 Start uses) themes, but will not show up in the classic, Windows 2000 style themes.  Here’s how the new start button looks with the Aero Classic theme:

There are tons of orbs available, including this cute smiley, so choose one that you like to make your computer uniquely yours.

This is a cute way to make your desktop unique, and can be a great way to make a truly personalized theme.  Let us know your favorite Start orb!

(VLC PLAYER) 10 Great Skins That Make VLC Media Player Look Awesome

VLC media player is terrific for playing all kinds of media files on your system but you may not care for the native look. We have a great collection of skins to help get you started on removing the “blah factor” and make VLC a lot more fun to look at.

Default Skins & Adding New Ones

When you install VLC Media Player it has a basic, native look to it. If you are just interested in functionality then it is not a problem, but if you like something with a bit more attitude then a few minutes work will terminate the problem.

The first step is to navigate to VLC’s Program Files folder and access the skins subfolder. You will see the .vlt file for the default skin included with your VLC installation.

Note: Unless you changed the folder name for VLC when installed (as shown here), look for a folder named VideoLAN.

Simply drag and drop the skins that you have downloaded into this folder. Now for the next step.

Go to the Tools Menu and access Preferences.

When the Preferences Window opens go to the Interface Settings section (it should display by default). Select the Use custom skin setting and click Save. You will need to restart VLC for the changes to take effect.

As you can see the default skin has a nice, clean look to it but now you get to start having fun.

Right click on the top bar, go to Interface, then Select skin, and choose the skin you would like to use. That is all there is to it.

Note: You will not need to manually restart VLC for the change to take effect.

Recommended Skins

Note: Most of the download links open the VLC Skins Homepage but others are off-site.

Alienware Darkstar

Note: The skin will need to be extracted from a .rar file.

The available skins will be laid out in a grid format. To see the details or download a skin click on the appropriate thumbnail. A popup window will open.

The popup window will show an enlarged view of the skin, show the versions that it is compatible with, and let you rate it. The download links for the skins are in the lower left corner.

If you are the adventurous type and just want to try them all at once there is a download link at the top of the page. Note that the mega pack is updated daily.

Note: If you do choose this option keep in mind that some of the skins may not be totally compatible (as experienced on our system).

Add Some Visual Flair to the Task Manager Display in Windows 7

If you love to customize your system as much as possible, then we have a fun way for you to change the color scheme for the Task Manager Window. Those Performance and Networking tabs will have a fresh new look in only a few minutes.

The default color scheme for the Performance and Networking tabs is not bad, but if you love customizing your system then even this can be changed.

Getting Started with Task Manager Modder

Task Manager Modder comes in .7z zip file and has a single file inside (Task Manager Modder.exe). All you will need to do is place it in an appropriate Program Files folder and create a shortcut. When you start Task Manager Modder for the first time you will have to agree to the EULA in order to use the program.

You will see an embedded Task Manager Window inside the program window for viewing color modifications and the color controls at the bottom.

Here is a closer look at the color adjustments toolbar. You can select from the set of included colors for each option or enter your own custom color codes if desired. During our tests we chose the colors included with the program.

Here are three examples that we set up on our system. You can have a lot of fun experimenting with the color schemes to get that “just perfect look. When you have everything fixed just the way that you like click on Modify Taskmgr. Keep in mind that if you have the Task Manager Window open it will temporarily close while the colors are changed then restart. Click Exit when you are finished modifying the color scheme.

Our Task Manager Window definitely had a different look and feel to it afterwards.

If you need or want to change back to the default color scheme just click on Restore Taskmgr. As discussed above, if you have the Task Manager Window open it will temporarily close while the colors are reset then restart.

By changing the colors in Task Manager, it could actually help you identify performance issues easier. So if you love to customize as much of your system as possible, then you can definitely have fun with Task Manager Modder.

How to disable Delete Confirmation Dialog in Windows 7 or Vista…

Every time you delete a file, Windows asks you “Are you sure you want to move this file to the Recycle Bin?” This is typically a good thing, to prevent you from deleting files by accident, but if you are trying to do some cleanup and need to delete a lot of files, you might not want to be prompted every single time.

There’s a simple way to turn it off, thankfully, although I’d recommend you leave it on the majority of the time.

Just right-click on your Recycle Bin and choose Properties from the menu.

Now you’ll see the Trash Properties dialog, and notice the “Display delete confirmation dialog” at the bottom.

Just uncheck the box, and close the dialog. No more confirmations!  (I’d still recommend that you turn it back on when you are done cleaning up your computer)
